Many reviews say this is a filler episode. I starting watching Breaking Bad a few months after the third season ended, during my first viewing I read numerous positive reviews of the third season including this episode. It’s a moving target which can allow for Walt’s spectacular pratfall and Jesse’s tense climb up the shaky ladder. Walt and Jesse in a confined space and in a holding pattern until they can clear the cook lab of a source of contamination, the fly of the title. I have been waiting desperately for an episode focused on Jesse and Walt, and I have finally gotten it. For what? | For two men who'll go to great lengths to protect each other, they have never been very good at actually saying that they care. When I watched Fly the first time I thought, "Man, what were they thinking?

They may be included in the weekly podcasts. "Fly" is Breaking Bad's lowest-rated episode on IMDB, and seems to be its most divisive. Walt is suffering from insomnia, worried about the choices he has made and the direction his life has taken.

I think Fly is a lot more significant than it gets credit for. I remember watching this episode when it first aired and I thought it was a pointless boring episode that stopped the story-line from progressing. Because fly doesn't advance the plot in any obvious way it's easy to understand why some viewers find it frustrating. Fly takes us underground with Jesse and Walt and seals us off from the world. When Walt says “It’s all contaminated” at the end does he mean the fly’s presence has affected the batch but it doesn’t matter? The fly he cannot catch is a manifestation of the contamination in his life he tries so desperately to rid himself of. But in true mad-scientist form he twists and writhes and eventually wiggles away to the dark side once again. That choice was later revealed to be the moment when Walt wishes that he could have died. Over the course of its broadcast, Breaking Bad aired 62 episodes over five seasons.

Breaking Bad has become identified, and rightly so, with its harrowing ordeal episodes: "Cat's in the Bag," "Four Days Out," and now "Fly." Not that so many people hate it; people are entitled to their opinions. Even Evil Has Standards: Arguably taken too far with Walt, who refuses to cook a batch of methamphetamine — one of the most harmful and addictive drugs that there is — because a fly … Audience Reviews for Breaking Bad: Season 3. He sleeps off this bout of self awareness and in the light of the next day it's business as usual... no going back now. Just so, the hunt for the little bugger in the lab was important in itself (for reasons I’ll get into in a second), but it also forced Walt and Jesse to have a confrontation over their working relationship, especially the extent to which Jesse takes the risks in their arrangement seriously. It’s the guilt over that act which prompts Walt to offer Jesse this kindness and its Jesse’s anger at the world over her death which makes him slap away the olive branch. Even though nothing important happens in the episode, it has a very good script. That scene was wonderful as Walt virtually does confess what he`s done and Jesse doesn`t know the extent of what he`s talking about. Overview: Walt becomes obsessed by a fly trapped in the lab. What were the best TV shows of the 2010s? I guess this episode is one of the last times we see Walter White and not Heisenberg. Even the smallest thing—especially the smallest thing—could mean the end. The Walt & Jesse relationship has always been at the core of my Breaking Bad obsession and Fly is a mesmerizing character study of their tragic bond. They keep the cast to a minimum, and shoot on existing sets, so it costs them very little. From the opening, you know that this will be bizarre. Now apparently he wishes he was dead and not having to fret over being under threat from Gus so he fixates on the fly. I love Fly's hauntingly long scenes and its lack of music which reminded of Buffy's 'The Body'. However the destruction of Hank and the Cousins leaves him in little doubt that his life is in danger. He perhaps realises that this was the turning point when what he was doing had lost any moral justification. "Breaking Bad" has consistently maintained a high level of quality throughout the past three seasons. Into this richly written scenario we also have the lullaby which accompanied the fly in the series’ most oblique teaser to date. As other people have said this really is a love it or loathe it episode; set almost entirely inside the lab it follows Walt's obsession with a fly! View production, box office, & company info. There is a fly loose in the lab. (I've seen his feature films "Looper" and "Brothers Bloom," and this episode is his best work.) He can’t reconcile her moral outrage with his conviction that life had wronged him. FAQ I thought it was nothing more than a mind fart on the part of the writers.

The fact that Walt recognizes that the fly could mean disaster for him and Jesse—and that a production disaster could mean death—shows powerfully how little margin for error Walt has, even as he has secured a long-term arrangement with Gus. It has the second-lowest number of viewers on its original broadcast of any season three episode, just ahead of "Half Measures" (1.19 million). And it forced Walt, with the aid of some spiked coffee, to confront his guilt over letting Jane choke to death (itself terrifically suspenseful as Walt came to the brink of confessing).

Walt desperately wants to save Jesse, who has become like an adoptive son to him, but Walt is also aware of how much he himself has contributed to Jesse's new self destructive mentality. (As it is, the combination of Lost, personal and business plans this weekend, and an entire Friday spent in mandatory office meetings kept me from reviewing most of NBC’s Thursday comedy finales.).

Title: It's rather a study in angst. And yet I have some reservations about it, and not because I’m one of the people enraged by the fact that we never learned what happened to the Russian. Based off many of the reviews, people seemed to dislike this episode a lot. Finally some TV that truly makes you think. But under the surface is still the pain of what happened to Jane. There is a moment in this episode which is honestly one of the most heartbreaking moments captured in the series so far. The reflexive nature of the episode makes it stand out, but it also marks it as a kind of episode that would be impossible without the steady plot progression of most of the show. This episode was an excellent look into the souls of Jesse and Walt. ), as opposed to the often weak action and thriller scenes, like the unbelievably unrealistic fight in the parking lot and the two main antagonists involved in that. The writers are consistent here as well as we know that Walt volunteers too much information under the influence of drugs. All rights reserved. So it is very different from and at the same time dependent on the rest of the show, which kept me from rating it even higher. The fact there are people out there who consider this the worst is shocking and disappointing to me. There are few shows out there with writers of such high quality; creating an ENGAGING and IMPACTFUL episode out of a fly is simply remarkable. The Most Underrated Episode Of The Greatest Show Ever. It’s more a crystallisation of Walt’s state of mind and for me very satisfying. By far the best episode in season 3. What to Watch if You Miss the "Game of Thrones" Cast. [Also as in Pine Barrens, the two characters were physically forced into isolation, but the way “The Fly” did it was essentially Breaking Bad: they were stuck together in a (supposedly) antiseptic lab, pursuing not a deadly adversary but—suiting a show that wrings drama out of small moments, magnified and slowed down as if under a scientist’s microscope—a tiny, tiny thing with potentially horrific implications.]. Once more he remembers the goodness in Jesse and warns him of the dangers of stealing meth from Gus (another detail he was obsessing on before the fly appeared). After I watched the screener of “The Fly,” I tweeted that the episode was like “Breaking Bad’s ‘Pine Barrens,’ plus.” The “Pine Barrens” comparison, while a little facile, meant this: like The Sopranos’ classic, this was a set piece involving two characters in isolation, on a quest/hunt together. "Fly" is the tenth episode of the third season of American television drama series Breaking Bad, and the 30th overall episode of the series. Amidst the regret and sweetness we got some nice comedy. The choice of the Fly in the lab feels appropriate for multiple reasons. It definitely became tense when it seemed like Walt might reveal the whole truth.
