final fantasy 9 review Well, combat is still entertaining and engaging.

It's a role-playing masterpiece produced by a studio that, back in the year 2000, was at the very top of its game. This was probably the last time series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi had a major creative hand in a Final Fantasy game, which I think accounts for why it feels to many like it was the last traditional Final Fantasy.

The battle system follows the traditional Active Time Battle rules closely, a tried and true system that works well, even if it means combat is nothing particularly special relative to other installments. Each piece of gear has some abilities it can teach, although certain skills are limited to particular characters. As far as additions go, the game includes a selection of cheats along the lines of those found in Final Fantasy 7. The other thing I really like is that the game auto-saves after every screen transition. While there aren’t quite as many mini-games in Final Fantasy 9 as there are in Final Fantasy 7, the few that are here are substantial.

What it lacks in a strong villain it more than makes up for with a likable core cast. Modern mobile devices rarely use that aspect ratio, and the resolutions of their displays are significantly higher.

All I want now is a Chrono Cross remaster ♥️. After Final Fantasy 8 moved the game series in a more serious and realistic direction (at least as far as character design goes), Square got back to its roots with a love letter to what made it so great to begin with. Not all aspects of Final Fantasy IX hold up perfectly in 2017, but the PSone swansong is still a stone cold classic.

One other compromise is that it appears the music has been compressed more than it was in the original version. The main villain’s theme in particular is very catchy, and unusually head-bobbing-worthy when an alternate version with drums comes on. But wow, what an ending. All of the 3D objects in the game are presented at much higher resolutions, and many of the character models have been touched up to give them added detail. So it hasn't changed.

When you equip an item, you gain the ability to use certain passive and active abilities that come with that item so long as you have it equipped. It's now my mission in life. Push notifications are a new site feature that you can opt into for updates whenever I put up something new.

Things sound a wee bit tiny. You can access them from the pause menu, so they aren’t staring you in the face the whole time you’re playing, which was a complaint some had about Final Fantasy 7.

Final Fantasy IX is a most buy to any RPG fan. In fact, I’d say this save system is probably my favorite new thing about this version of the game, as it makes it a lot easier to sneak in quick slices of the game during pockets of free time.

Some of the references feel like they’re winking a little too hard at the audience, but there’s quite a bit of sincerity running through most of the game.

I was gonna get the PS1 classic version, but again, impulse.

Still, I think Final Fantasy 9 is my favorite of the PlayStation-era Final Fantasy games. Unlike the previous entry, you don’t get “limit breaks” or anything like that when your characters are near-death. The music is great as always, and I say that without any qualifications. As an added bonus, it also works like a checkpoint in case a boss wrecks you. I appreciate all the time the developers put in to creating such a large world with so many secrets to be discovered. And now, the glorious PSone classic has been ported to PlayStation 4 with enhanced visuals, shorter load times, and built-in cheats.

Outside of those minor distractions, most of Final Fantasy 9‘s gameplay is quite predictable by design. You can find sub-quests by going off the beaten path, and there’s a ridiculous optional boss for expert players to grind their teeth on. Good luck! The cast of playable characters is fairly large, and unlike the previous two games, each has their own unique skills that separates them from the others. Final Fantasy 9 has everything a Final Fantasy game ought to.

It's a timeless collection of memorable music, from the wistful main theme to the thrilling battle tune. The story is incredibly difficult to talk about without spelling out the entire plot, but suffice it to say that it’s unique enough to work on its own while possessing many familiar elements.

The most obvious borrowing from previous games (at least, the most obvious to me), however, are the abilities and spells/special moves you pick up. Those little things, especially the blurry backgrounds that really feel off the place with these new high-res models, that's what kept me from buying this incredible game again.Instead of that, I'm gonna play the original version on PsVita. -------------------------------------------------- It might have been downgraded to a 9, but it still scored higher than FFXV despite all that extra money and development time.
