In it, a girl tending her grandmother’s cow has observed a white heron, a bird that is sought after by the ornithologist who finds his way to their farm in its pursuit. It is a good starter book for someone who wants to become familiar with female American writers. EMBED.

These two women are patronized by the men but they are the smart ones, and keep their discovery under wraps from the men!

The earliest stories are Rebecca Harding Davis' naturalistic "Life in the Iron Mills" (published in 1861 and predating Émile Zola's, Great Poems by American Women: An Anthology, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.
These really are "great" stories, iconic even, making this collection a good addition to any library. And I couldn't put down "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. The vernacular just made it too tough to read for me, and there was a word, I think it was "korl" that came up several times. So consider all of these stories a "must" for anyone to consider oneself well read (in my humble opinion anyway, which isn't worth much but whatev). No Kindle device required. Another one I really liked in this collection is "A Jury of Her Peers." A weird mixture of stories. After completing this slim anthology, I wonder why I waited so long. Bestselling series of coloring books for adults offers highly detailed illustrations on premium paper – relax and color. Not only do I not know that word, but Google doesn't know it either! Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019. Interesting collection but - dang - it seemed like the stories were curated for "telling the grim, sad truth"....most were about women in sad, depressing & unfortunate circumstances.

Not that it was pretty or pleasant; but the character and descriptions of his surroundings were peculiar and interesting.

I'm not a fan of short stories, but I must admit -- the selections for this book are well-chosen. A couple other okay ones, some really weird ones and then downright sad ones. These really are "great" stories, iconic even, making this collection a good addition to any library. I had previously read the yellow wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Probably my favorite was the yellow wallpaper one. Unable to add item to Wish List. I received Great Short Stories by American Women as a Christmas gift several years ago, and it's been languishing on my shelves for a long time. Though I found the ending a little disappointing and falling so flat, I decided to read more of her stories and ordered a collection from the library.
