Travel Blue Sea offers both crewed and bareboat catamaran yacht charters in the greek islands and especially in the Ionian Sea. Whilst on your sailing holiday in the Ionian, you will experience many different forms of mooring which you may not be used to. There is something very special about spending a night at anchor, free swinging in a beautiful deserted Ionian bay! Appropriate PPE should be in place for seafarers’ protection (including safety helmet, safety shoes and gloves). Our yachts are fully equipped and well maintained, given personal care with attention to detail, and tailor made options on the clients needs. Inevitably this has led to equipment failures, either through poor system design or through the selection of unsuitable components with consequent damage, injury and even death. Then it’s just a case of easing off the bowline so you drop back to the stern buoy. 2: Ben positions the buoy amidships so that David can thread the line through. A mooring operation risk assessment should always be carried out. In many of the rivers around our coastline, these take the form of fore-and-aft, or trot moorings. In addition, OCIMF  has recently released the fourth edition of its Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4) , an industry publication for the safe mooring of tankers and gas carriers at terminals, providing clear and concise guidance for ship and terminal designers, ship operators and mooring line manufacturers on safe mooring system design, with an emphasis on the safety of ship and terminal personnel. Officer was injured because he was standing in the snap-back zone of the spring line when it parted. 4: As the boat approaches the buoy, Ben can control her forward motion with the tension on the aft line. 4: Moored up safely. 3: It’s extra important to centre the rudder when doing this in astern. There is no doubt that, this duty requires a good technique initially in lifting the heavy eye of the rope, followed by a good pulling technique. 5David grabs the buoy, and Ben cleats the aft line before assisting on the foredeck. Enclosed space deaths onboard: Why do they persist? This should include (but may not be limited to): Crew should make sure that there are enough manpower available to do the task safely. DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY, communicate clearly to all the crew what you are planning on doing and allocate the jobs clearly, prepare the yacht in plenty of time (fenders, dinghy, anchor, mooring warps, music off, tidy the cockpit, tidy the lines), devise some hand signals to aid communication along the length of the yacht, only the skipper should be giving out orders to the crew, skipper – stay on the helm and cover the throttle at all times and keep watch for hazards in the water (swimmers, lines, buoys). You can always haul the boat forwards or aft to exchange lines later. Visitors’ trot moorings, on the other hand, especially in busy places like Lymington, are more often seen between pairs of buoys with mooring rings on top. Seafarers involved in mooring operations should be given additional instruction on the specific equipment and mooring configurations used on the vessel. It is quieter, cooler and less chance of having anchor snags with other boats! You will also find in many bays that when there are other boats moored near by, you will not be able to swing safely, especially if the other boats are long lining. A boat for rowing out to a mid-river mooring and back is very different to one designed to be stowed on davits and taking day-trips. A snap-hook on the end of a long line would have made it much easier, allowing us to moor up quickly and safely. Plus restoring a Contessa 26 (and then having second thoughts), dinghy cruising in the Severn and how to make a ship's wheel in wood. David hands the line to Ben, who continues to pay it out until the bow reaches the next buoy. If you are anchored in a beautiful Ionian bay and you wish to stop the possibility of the yacht swinging with wind direction change, then this is a great technique to employ. Required fields are marked *. You’ll need to thread your own mooring lines through the rings, and you’ll often have to raft alongside other boats. All Blue Sea yachts come equipped with long floating shore lines. anchoring and mooring are often imperfectly understood. Here, David and Ben put the bow line on before working on the stern line. The best knot for tying to the shore is the bowline, as even when it has been put under significant tension it is possible to undo without too much effort. This was a particularly difficult mooring to pick up, owing to the small rings on the buoys.

The spring line parted due to tensile overload even though the load being applied to the line at the time was less than a quarter of its specified minimum breaking load. As she reaches the buoy, with a small rudder adjustment and the engine put in neutral, she will stay there happily while Ben grabs the buoy.

With forward line secured, you can manoeuvre to grab the stern buoy. the location and use of rollers, dollies and leads. With one line on you’re securely moored and can attach the remaining line in less of a hurry. This short video will give you some ideas on how to anchor successfully. 3: David pays out the line as Ben motors ahead towards the next buoy. Costs. Be mindful of the possibility of getting lines around the propeller. Keep enough way on that the bow doesn’t get blown off before it can arrive upwind of the forward mooring buoy. This made placing the boat in the right place and picking the buoy up relatively easy but, as you’ll see, it’s not always this simple. There is a monthly mooring cost of about EUR 200 depending on the size of the boat, and there are water taxes, which are minimal, but if you live on a proper steel boat (as opposed to floating concrete or a woonark) it must go to dry dock every 4–5 years, for an assessment of the hull. An officer-in-charge of the forward mooring party on board an LNG tanker suffered severe head injuries when he was struck by a mooring rope that parted during a berthing operation at an LNG terminal. 3: David walks forward with the bow line, while Ben grabs the stern line and walks aft to secure it. The most important aspects to remember when mooring the yacht are: If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us! All Blue Sea Yachts come equipped with marked anchor chain (and plenty of it) and the excellent holding Rocna Anchors, to give you the very best chance of a successful anchoring experience.

After lashing the tiller amidships, Ben moves forward to help with the lines. The crew can now put on any secondary lines. Fore-and-aft trot moorings are cheaper than marinas and have many advantages - but they can be tricky to pick up. The instructional video below explains in detail how to do it like a pro!
