'Girls like me are very rare..' (Julie Christie as Petulia), .. and so are movies like Richard Lester's captivating stranger's perspective of late '60's San Francisco, one which adroitly radiates the peculiar vibe of the counterculture era by way of this director's singular storytelling technique, incorporating fast cutting and a splintered narrative, taking the viewer back and forth in the chronology of the affair between an 'arch kook' (Christie at her most staggeringly gorgeous) and a soon-to-be divorced surgeon experiencing a mid-life crisis (George C. Scott). The result is a highly abstract and often absurd exploration of modernity, where the vacuousness of our protagonists sanitised and overly convenient lives combined with their own personal woes gives…. It's a dumb little drama about a failed affair. The first half of the movie really is quite good, I especially loved the random silent shots of visually striking images (one of my favorite late 60s tropes) and my favorite element of the film on the whole was the relationship between George C Scott's Archie and Shirley Knight's Polo, a newly divorced couple navigating the fact that they are no longer together but still love each other and harbor no hard feelings.
