Skylab 4: Final Mission Launches to Skylab The third and final mission to the Skylab space station got underway on November 16, 1973, with a thunderous liftoff from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch … Skylab-4 would provide far more historical footnotes than those of a culinary variety however. Perhaps due to the fact that the crew carried out a minor insurrection while on orbit, the trio would never fly in space again. The Skylab 4 spacecraft was moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building on August 12, where it was mated with the launch vehicle. The Skylab 4/Saturn 1B space vehicle is on the pad in the background. NASA released the image, but no one noticed the fact that the crew had taken pictures of the highly-classified facility for years.

All total the crew of Skylab-4 conducted four EVAs with a total time spent outside the station at 22 hours, 13 minutes – a small part of the time that the trio sent on orbit. The trio could not use salt for medical research reasons and they lacked condiments to remedy the situation (later space travelers would find that hot sauce helped solve the problem). A week into the mission Skylab’s attitude control gyroscope malfunctioned. It was discovered that the cause of the failure was a lack of adequate lubrication. The trio would be the last to journey to the United States’ first space station and would discover some of the difficulties with space travel – as well as conduct scientific studies of the Earth, the Sun as well as celestial bodies from far out in the solar system.

Crew members were the Commander Gerald P. Carr, Science Pilot Edward G. Gibson and William R. Pogue. It replaced the S-IV second stage of the Saturn I with the much more powerful S-IVB, able to launch a partially fueled Apollo Command/Service Module (CSM) or a fully fueled Lunar Module (LM) into low Earth orbit for early flight tests before the larger Saturn V needed for lunar flight was ready.
