Instead, they knock Mario off his back.

See r/CasualNintendo for Nintendo fan art, remixes, jokes and memes. YIDS is extremely, fantastically mediocre. The new one is enjoyable, but the old one is consistently more fun.

Is that the one with the terrible opening song? Yoshi's New Island is a perfectly pleasant video game that I have a hard time recommending. Nintendo only offered the original game to 3DS early adopters as a make-good for the system's first-year price cut. The Mario series had gone 3D for a decade. The new game is similarly aesthetically bold, this time making it appear that Yoshi's new adventure occurs in a world illustrated by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and other masters. I believe the game would be just as fondly remembered as the original if the music was any good. It's simply not great. They released the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on … Why A Yoshi's Island …

It dominates my impressions of the new one. Along the way, Yoshi carries a baby version of Mario on his back. For the last week or so, I've been flipping back and forth between the original Yoshi's Island (above) and this new one, both on my 3DS. In one level the wizard instead shrinks Yoshi, who is promptly swallowed by the enemy.

I'm pretty sure Yoshi's Island wasn't released on the VC because of copyright over the fx chip. Back. It's nice to see classic Yoshi's Island concepts back, but it'd be more exciting to see them in a game that did great things with them. No other sidescroller plays like a Yoshi game.

Maybe the Shy-guys who move part of the level scenery around are new?

Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. One level would introduce the concept of a boulder that you could roll throughout a level to crush enemies but that you could also use as a stepping stone to reach hidden areas. Lots of other levels and bosses seem to be based on those in the original (Hector the Reflector to Bigger Boo, Big Bungee Piranha to Naval Piranha, the first adult Bowser fight to Hookbill the Koopa, the other two Bowser phases to the first game's final boss, the Cave that Never Ends to the Very Looong Cave). Level design and music was also fairly mediocre, but it does look good. I did enjoy the individual baby's skills though, while Wario's was gimmicky and buggy as all hell, everyone else's abilities were fun and useful.

In these zones, Yoshi is on a timer, which can be extended by picking up clocks as he charges through. He'll die if he lands on spikes or falls into a bottomless pit, but enemies can't hurt him.

The DS game is completely different then the original yoshi's island and its a new entry/sequel in the series so thats why it didn't score the same. They weren't great visuals for what the DS could do, but they weren't bad. Yoshi games don't play like Mario games.

It's the only Yoshi oriented game I played. I thought the level design, while not as good as the original, was good enough to play through multiple times.

People always lump it in when they say "waah all the Yoshi's Island games are bad except the original!!!

That's ok, but it is basic and feels uninspired. In the original game, Yoshi transformed by touching items sprinkled throughout the game's regular levels. The original Yoshi's Island was filled with fresh ideas, and so many of them show up in the new game.

I thought it was pretty nice, but the final boss was definitely lacking in flair compared to the first game.

It's still an excellent game and plays well on Nintendo's newer handheld. Playing a Yoshi's Island well has always involved more slowly poking through a level and finding its hidden collectibles. Go on. I thought it was very dissapointing in comparison to the original, the new babies were a fun mechanic that diversified the gameplay so I was happy enough with that, but the level designs and boss battles were severely lacking and that's a huge negative considering those are the things that the original game excelled at.

There's little reason to accept the substitute. Yoshi's Island, for example, threw a joke at the player by first conditioning them to expect the game's wizard to regularly create the game's bosses by casting a spell that super-sized normal enemies.

Not sure exactly how the GBA port stands up to the SNES original, but I'm sure it's far better than Yoshi's Island DS. What was new in Yoshi's Island is back in New Island. Sadly, for someone like me who played and loved the first Yoshi's Island, it's hard not to look at Yoshi's New Island in the coldest of ways and see it as some sort of business decision gone wrong.

Level design had some questionable decisions. It's really, really close to the original in terms of ideas, to the point it sometimes feels like a reboot. I mean, it's a decent game, which is more than you can say about Yoshi's Topsy Turvy or anything else like that. The implementation is uneven. Some is decent (like say, the intro theme or the wildlands theme or the lies), some is atrocious for where it plays (the castle theme) and a lot is just... kind of there. 4. It's a fun game, challenging and you can play as more characters. He'd be on a timer and could extend the timer, same as the new game, but if the player failed to get him to a target destination, the game would snap Yoshi back to his starting point as if he'd been tethered by a bungee cord. It might be tough to top a game whose first boss was defeated by throwing enough eggs at him to make his pants fall off, but, hey, imagine if they did.

People remember Yoshi's story more than this game. Given that the controls and gameplay mechanics are basically identical across the two games and that the art is strong in both, the meaningful differences are almost all about level design.

(Upon the release of Yoshi's New Island, Nintendo still isn't selling the original on the 3DS, but it will start selling it to play on its Wii U console next month.).

I can't ignore the old game. The copyrights must have recently been resolved as Yoshi's Island and Starfox are available on the Mini SNES Classic.

With this new Yoshi's Island, however, it is. Good is good, but great's better and makes good look pretty bad. The babies were a cool idea, they did mix things up a bit, but ultimately I found them to be tedious. Yoshi's New Island gets a lot of hate. waaahh," but I think it's a great game. It was a throwback, remixing traditional 2D Mario sidescrolling concepts. Players aim a targeting reticle that tracks in an arc in front of Yoshi. They are one of the few elements I didn't recall from the original. The DS version is pretty different though, and a butt ton harder than SNES. I mean, it's a decent game, which is more than you can say about Yoshi's Topsy Turvy or anything else like that.

Well, sort of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDSgsTmJ8o8. I really liked it, personally. For all of the safe things Yoshi's New Island does, its creators deserve credit for taking chances with the game's art. The switch from one art style in one level to another in the next can be jarring, but the new game does use its palette to create some gorgeous sights. They might not want to right now, because the original game wins every comparison with the new game. I feel like the baby swapping mechanic was a good idea, but should have been executed better, it takes too long to switch from one baby to another, which kinda leaves a sour taste in some people's mouths. A Reddit community for news, discussion, and stories about Nintendo. Worse, sometimes Yoshi's New Island implements a Yoshi's Island concept in an inferior way. Advantage: Yoshi's Island, I think. Out of all the (main) Yoshi games, this game doesn't seem to be talked much about. Some again are pretty good, but a lot are literally rotoscoped from past games or in a completely different art style to Yoshi's Island sprites: https://gamingreinvented.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/bowsereshade.png.

It's not bad but it's not great either.

Off topic, but Yoshis wolly world was really good. Yoshi's Island DS is a sequel to Yoshi's Island for the SNES (Which was ported to the GBA). All-in-all it was a good game, but it could've been a great game if more work was put into it. No twist. There are few new ideas in the new game. Baby Mario is immediately encased in a bubble, starts crying and floats up the screen, moving left and right to make him harder to catch. I loved Yoshi's Island on SNES, so when my gf bought herself a DS I had to get this and play with her.

How is it against the others?

Perhaps it's hidden in a level I didn't unlock en route to clearing the game, but the only great idea from Yoshi's Island that I didn't find in the new one were the enemies who make Yoshi drunk. I already mentioned one-way doors being counterintuitive with the collecting items but there's also an annoying amount of insta-death traps in the most difficult levels (tbf, that's the only way Yoshi can die in the game realistically). However, there hasn't been a true remaster of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. These games are about Mario's infancy, after all. They released the GBA version of Yoshi's Island on the VC on Wii U because that didn't use the fx2 chip. You don't hear anyone talk about it because it's not good enough to enthuse about, not bad enough to whine about. This was a strange game for Nintendo to produce. The original let Yoshi transform into various vehicles. It might seem unduly harsh to knock the new Yoshi game, given how colorful, cheerful and pleasing it is.

I don't remember much of the soundtrack, so that was probably a bit lack-luster.

Coupled with a return and improvement of the great sound effects and sound design of the original, Yoshi's New Island at least looks and sounds better than average. The original game had levels designed around the idea of massive spheres falling from the sky and chopping up the level's terrain. That's why I made this thread. It's fine. Why does this game keep telling me "Your Saved Data is corrupted."
