After all, aren’t all of our emotions simply products of our own personal experiences, and filled with our own unique prejudices? Another example of the agenda and corruption of Twin Galaxies is that Mitchell, for all his talk, never competed live against Wiebe. on The Minions of King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters. International Student Experience Reflection. The people in the high score gaming community are hilarious to watch, and are passionate about their sport. -- 79 total posts, Time-Traveling Western SHOWDOWN IN YESTERYEAR Wraps Production! After witnessing odd and weird injustices to poor Wiebe occur throughout the entire movie, including the intentional mispronouncing of his name by the old and creepily immature super nerds that run the classic gaming community, I just wanted out of this particular subculture. “I’ve been asked to address things that are recently in the media,” Billy Mitchell said in a YouTube video on Sunday recorded for Old School Gamer Magazine, for which he is an advisor. I doesn't matter if he's #1 or not, because he's #1 in our hearts. Getting back to the inspirational aura of Wiebe, I have to say the guy lives what we all want. The legendary gamers who squared off in the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, were at it again last night. Now that the passions ignited by the film have died down, I’ve had time to think, and it still bothers me that I’ll never know the truth about Billy Mitchell. Rather than an epic war between these two rivals, or even a battle, we are presented with Steve Wiebe playing Donkey Kong, while Billy Mitchell stands back and talk to his minions, who are interspersed in the main game score company? It was an insight into a world that, quite frankly, I did not know existed. He pressed on through every defeat and every obstacle and still came out on top. International Student Experience Reflection. But was this my own true emotion, or one simply given to me by a manipulative director? GeekWire’s coverage this week is underwritten by Ziply Fiber. Perhaps Billy Mitchell isn’t the heartless, gamer-devouring demon that the film depicted him to be, but that knowledge doesn’t make me inclined to dislike him any less. I couldn’t stand watching Wiebe get continually walked on throughout the documentary. All this from a documentary about Donkey Kong. I was literally cheering for him out loud, which woke up my roommate… oops. We are treated to a rather large slew of Steve Wiebe’s life problems throughout this film, making it almost impossible not to root for him). Instead of what would seem to be the easy task of putting two men in front of an arcade machine and saying “play”, the entirety of this 90 minute movie is a struggle to get the two men to play each other. If I were to continue to extrapolate, it seems like much of his mental acumen is spent criticizing himself. While watching King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, there where probably ten to fifteen times when I just wanted to punch Billy Mitchell. This is why I was incredibly happy to see someone like Steve Wiebe who plays by the rules (apparently), and isn’t a complete jerk to everyone around him. The narrative of his life created by the film—that of someone with strong talent but, as in the words of his wife, “always coming up short in life”—this sort of tragic characterization does well to frame Wiebe as a sympathetic protagonist. My mind might say “Hey, give the guy a chance,” but my heart will probably say “Kick him.”. As much as I loved and rooted for Steve, I couldn’t help but sympathize with his wife and children. -- 49 total posts, Dedicated WANDAVISION trailer hits & it looks wild! Steve illustrates perfectly that success requires sacrifice. But Wiebe’s arcade cabinet tweaked out and he was unable to post a score. He was rude, conceited, and a liar. Sure, I couldn’t stand the smug smiles he flashed toward the camera or the infuriating way he refused to meet Steve in an honest, live competition, but was that really who Billy Mitchell was? She couldn’t stand it at first and eventually through time and persuasion, was able to understand his ambition. I am not sure if this is a accurate portrayal of the gaming arcade world or if it is just how the documentarians chose to show it. And honestly, I’m still not. Anyways, I want to start by saying that I have never seen so much dedication in one person as I noticed in Wiebe. New Media: Storytelling in Literature, Films, and Games, A blog and a course at Vanderbilt University (English 3726). First off, I actually liked the film, which was something I never thought I would say. It serves as an example for how important gaming is. Despite Mitchell’s prowess at the Donkey Kong arcade game, after 80 minutes of tricks, insults, and unrestrained arrogance, I truly wanted to punch the smug gamer in his self-righteous face. Good had conquered evil, and all was right once more. By sheer luck, this creature was given the ability to play video games very well, particularly Donkey Kong, but it is far more inclined to be manipulative and arrogant. At the beginning of this segment, they show Steve talking about how he got started playing Donkey Kong after being laid off work and wanting/needing to find a way “to feel control of something.” They film Steve playing piano, playing video games, and driving, which are all solitary activities that arguably serve as an outlet for Steve to express himself, exhibit his competitive nature, or just have a space for himself. Fortunately, Billy’s personality was somewhat equaled out by Steve Wiebe. Meh, whatever. At one point he even says: “Not even Helen of Troy had that much attention” when he hears how many people are in attendance to watch his video taped world record (see video at end). All of the slime of the Earth somehow found its way to one central location and produced the vile being that is Billy Mitchell. Essentially, gaming can be whatever you need it to be. It doesn’t seem that Steve wants to prove something to the people in his life as much as he wants to prove something to himself. However, his dark arms had already reached out into the minds of others on the world record scene, and the score was annulled. The scene of Wiebe playing Donkey Kong is played in contrast with an interview with his parents, and particularly with a comment made by his father, who assumed that Steve Wiebe would be a “lifer” at Boeing as he had been, an assumption that was shattered, of course, by Steve being laid off and setting the stage for the film’s narrative.
