When the children were separated at the border, I had very, very, very many nightmares, and I still do. They were married 66 years, until Sol’s death in June, 2013.

In Dorohucza, Stefi was briefly reunited with her one, remaining relative – little sister, Kayla. Suddenly the Germans got very, very impatient and they collected us all and put us on a train, and it was the first time we went on a passenger train and [at] either end of the train there were machine guns. When I wanted to give up, I said [to myself] what a great lady my mother was, who stood by all the hardship, raising six children, all by herself in such a primitive circumstances.

In January 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the camp to find 7,600 emaciated prisoners left behind, heaps of corpses and seven tons of human hair that had been shaved off the prisoners. There was no indoor plumbing, there was no electricity, my mother had to go every day to the farmers’ market, purchase the food, prepare the food for six children, also make a living. They divided them up one potato per person per day. Leon and his cousin returned to Wielun where Leon retrieved his matura, that he had the foresight to slip into a bottle, hermetically sealed with wax, and bury in the basement of his family home, now taken over by strangers. “I think that a kapo must have known that this train of mothers and children—that were no use to them for work—would end up in the gas chambers,” said Hornick. All I could tell you [was] that it was quite dark, I saw just kind of darkness, and we didn't know who's alive and who's not alive.

Denied official working papers for being Jewish, Inge was paid in secret. Leon Madowitz died at 97 after a life spent helping others as a family practice doctor in New York. When Ed was twelve, the Nazis discovered that the orphanage clergy was working with the resistance. I was told at a very young age that I am a very talented gymnast. We stood at the end of the line, with my mum in the middle, Magda [my sister] and I. I wanted to be a gymnast and be competing in the Olympics. FACT CHECK: We strive for accuracy and fairness.

And [Doctor Josef Mengele] asked, ‘Is this your mother or is this your sister?’ And I did not forgive myself [for] saying, ‘That's my mother.’ So Doctor Mengele points my mother to go this way, and my sister and I the other. On May 17, 1943, Inge and her parents were among the last Jews in Berlin to be deported to Birkenau (Auschwitz). He didn’t listen to me. Her harrowing story began with a sacrifice: When Goldie was 13, in March 1943, she and her older sister were grabbed off the street by the Nazis to be sent to a forced labor camp. Her obituary paints a picture of a happy life turned upside down by horror, and the strength that got her through it: Born Szyfra Fiszbaum to Syma and Yitzchak Fiszbaum in Lublin, Poland on May 15, 1926, Stefi was the third of four children.

Leon’s father was arrested at the border of Poland and Czechoslovakia and never seen again. Sylvia was separated from her family that day; the rest of her family was taken by train to Treblinka. I could not stand up well on my feet. An official scrambled into their car. Only one may go, you must choose!” With her father unable to choose, Goldie volunteered to stay and for her sister to go home. Whenever there was a hanging, we were all called out to watch it, and I remember us shouting, ‘For God's sake, where is God?’ A young boy hung because he picked some bit of food up. Twice a week we compile our most fascinating features and deliver them straight to you. And that was the most important thing for me: to belong again. I remember a young boy.

At the end of the war he joined the Polish Army and came to the camp at Cannon Hall. They were burning—burning between 12,000 and 13,000 people a day. At each location, she witnessed horrifically haunting images of human suffering and endured starvation, beatings and atrocious living conditions. They had traveled for days in the dark, 70 women and children packed shoulder to shoulder in a cattle car, with little food and a single sanitation bucket to share. We were freezing, we had very little food to eat. Life was good. Later, Sylvia ensured that the loved ones she lost would never be forgotten: Recognizing that most of Kansas City’s Holocaust survivors had never had a funeral for their lost loved ones, Sylvia helped Morris organize the New American’s Club of the Jewish Community Center of Kansas City, MO, and in 1963 helped build the “Memorial to the Six Million Martyrs,” one of the first monuments in America ever dedicated to the lost Jewish populations of Europe. For young girls like ourselves, possibly even our mother [hadn't seen] us undressed. Daringly, Stefi eventually escaped from Dorohucza by hiding amongst a group of travelling civilians and then dashing into the Polish wilderness. When the Warsaw Ghetto had been liquidated down to 40,000 Jews, the same German Officer helped both Sylvia and Morris escape the Ghetto.

After only a few days, the SS called for a photographer.
