Coordinators and researchers from the NASA Earth Applied Sciences Disasters Program are hard at work developing maps, imagery and analysis such as these to aid local agencies and response teams in understanding the impacts from the western U.S. fires and the potential risks to people, infrastructure, and the environment.

NASA instrument observes California's wildfires — and the damage they're leaving behind — from space. The image contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2020), processed by ESA and analyzed by the NASA-JPL/Caltech ARIA team.

This research was carried out at JPL funded by NASA Earth Applied Sciences Disasters Program. NASA provides data that can be used to detect active fires and thermal anomalies, such as volcanoes, and gas flares. Wildfires can destroy natural resources and human structures.

Preliminary validation was done by comparing to independent observations by NASA’s VIIRS and MODIS sensors available at the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) and fire perimeter information available at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).

Sentinel-1 data were accessed through the Copernicus Open Access Hub and the NASA mirror managed by Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF). The active fire / hotspot data can be viewed in FIRMS Fire Map or in NASA’s Worldview, delivered as email alerts or downloaded in the following formats: SHP, KML, TXT, WMS. But not all fires are good.

The maps were provided to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of NASA's efforts supporting risk management for the western U.S. fires, and have been made available in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) format on the NASA Disasters Mapping Portal.

Active Fire Mapping News August 25, 2020: Due to temporary interruption in the near real-time data stream from NASA for Aqua MODIS observations, Aqua MODIS imagery and subsets are temporarily unavailable from the Active Fire Mapping Program website.
